John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

NIV

Eye-level view of a serene landscape with a peaceful river

Let's explore John 14:27 and the Heartfull story

  • Is Jesus saying that He leaves us with peace? How do we access that peace?

  • Jesus refers to the peace He is giving as "my peace". What kind of peace would our sovereign God have? Would God ever experience worry about money, safety, or our current circumstances?

  • Jesus says "Do not" twice. That is pretty strong. Is He saying that if we do let our heart be troubled or afraid, we will negate this gift of peace? P

  • God cares about us spiritually, emotionally and physically. What could fear and a troubling heart do to our physical hearts?

  • Are Proverbs 4:23, Philippians 4:7 and John 14:27 all tied together? Guard your heart, with peace, that I give to you?

  • If God was speaking directly to you in this verse, what is He saying to you and why?

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The night my husband confessed to the affair he had been having for years, and the nature of it, I was in shock and scared for the future of our family. After hours of questions, tears, anger, hurt and extreme disappointment, I went into our bathroom and cried out to God. I had only recently reconnected with a church after a log time of "being too busy" with my career and family, even though I had a rich relationship with the Lord all through my growing up years. I must have been a pitiful sight to God that evening. My heart felt like someone had beaten it to a pulp. I had no energy. My body was so weak that my head kept falling to my chest because I did not have the strength to hold it up. And then I felt God's Spirit wrap around me. It was almost a physical sensation. It empowered me with strength to carry my weight. I shifted to thinking about each step needed to keep my daughters whole as we went through this.

Once again I felt my heart being protected. The divorce was not a walk in the park and took a long time, but we all got through it.
