Of all the Scripture verses to explore on a women's Bible Study of the heart, the most popular one was Proverbs 4:23.

  • What do you think God's message is?

  • Is He speaking of our physical heart? Our heart as our center of our will and emotions?

  • How does one "guard" a heart?

  • Why do you think God cares about our heart?

  • If God was speaking directly to you in this verse, what is He saying to you and why?

Story: My Guarded Heart

This verse jumped out at me the first time I read it. Somehow my young heart had been guarded when my dad died. The loss was overwhelming. As I drove from California to Michigan for the funeral, I envisioned my dad and Jesus standing next to one another in a "bro" stance with their arms around each other's shoulders. I had always thought my own heart would break when he died. It was something I worried about as a child since his dad had died at 42 of a heart condition. At that moment though I knew my heart would survive and so would I.
